This is a mountain walk and you need to prepare accordingly. The recommended map is Parco Del Gigante, Sheet 14 / 16 (1:250000) and the walk should not be attempted unless you have this map. In addition do not attempt in bad weather or low cloud and do tell someone your plans before leaving the valley base. Good way marks most of the way, red and white Club Alpino Italiano with path numbers (sometimes) do help with navigation. Refreshments available at Refugio Prato Spilla (when open).

The walk encompasses all that is beautiful and rugged in this area, combining woodland trails, 5 mountain lakes and a spectacular ridge traverse. Along the ridge and as you start to descend you may see and hear wild boar, you will certainly see where they have been digging up the ground looking for food. This is a beautiful but hard walk and well worth the effort. On a clear day you will be able to see the coast and the Ligure Sea. The duration is likely to be approximately 8 hours excluding stops so do take enough food and water.

Directions to the start - Exit the A15 Autostrada (Palma to La Spezia) at the Aulla exit approximately 15Km from La Spezia. From Aulla follow the SS665 signposted P.So Langastrello and pass through the villages of Monti, Licciana Nardi, and Tavernelle. As soon as you reach the summit of the pass you will see a right turn signposted to Comano, just after this there is plenty of room to park on the right hand side of the road.

The walk - The walk starts on the other side of the road to where you have parked opposite the turn to Comano. Follow a green lane climbing gently, this path is numbered 00 but at this point the way marks are not clear. Continue to follow this path passing Lago Squincio(1.7Km) then continue climbing steeply up to a ridge (2.5Km). On reaching the ridge turn right onto path 703 passing Lago Scurb and L. Verdarole the path then leads you to Refugio Prato Spilla (Skiing centre).

At the ski centre take the path 707 to the right hand side of the main buildings going over a wooden bridge and passing a newly constructed assault course, continue on this path (do not turn on to path 707A) past L.Ballano (5.5Km). As you approach L Verde look out for the marked path on the left through the trees (before the derelict buildings) follow the path up towards the Refugio Biv Cagnin (worth a look inside). Continue on this path now in open ground above the tree line; look out for path 507 that turns back to your right taking you up to the ridge passing Lago Martini finally to reach the main ridge path (8Km).

Turn left along the ridge path 00 to reach Mount Bocco (9.5Km) this is the highest point on the walk (1791Mtr) and commands wonderful views in all directions.

Continue from Mount Bocco on path 00 and after descending about 100Mtr in height take the path 110 on the right and follow this down to the road (13Km) (A long steep descent). Walk up the road to return to the start (13.5Km).
