The Peak is one of Hong Kong's "must visit" destinations and consequently attracts a lot of visitors. However, very few of them venture more than a short distance from the top station of The Peak Tram and you only have to go a couple of hundred yards to escape the crowds. This easy short walk circumnavigates the Peak on two narrow routes which are classed as "roads" although strict traffic controls in place mean that you are unlikely to share the route with anyone but walkers and joggers. However, you are rewarded with some fine views over the city, harbour and outlying islands.

The walk starts at the square outside the tram station. With the station and shops to your back, go straight ahead along Harlech Road and follow it as it contours through shady woodland. From time to time views open out towards Aberdeen and its reservoir and across the channel towards Lamma island. After a couple of kilometres, you will arrive at a pleasantly located picnic site and playground where you bear slightly right on to Lugard Road.

At this point, the Hong Kong trail comes in from the left and the walk follows it along Lugard Road back to the start. Lugard Road was built in the 19thC as a walking promenade and as it winds its way around the western and northern edges of the Peak, expansive views open out towards the mountainous Lantau island. Later, the iconic buildings of Central and Kowloon along with Victoria Harbour and its never ending panorama of shipping come into view far below. Lugard Road finally brings you back at the start, having offered a splendid birds eye view of this fascinating city. At this point, if you wish it's possible to walk back down the hill to Central down the clearly waymarked path.

If you don't want to walk to or from the start, it's very accessible by public transport, either by the Peak Tram or by the frequent 15 bus service from the Star Ferry and Exchange Square bus station. Details of the bus service can be found here.

Stay Safe

Do enjoy yourself when out walking and choose a route that is within your capabilities especially with regard to navigation.

Do turn back if the weather deteriorates especially in winter or when visibility is poor.

Do wear the right clothing for the anticipated weather conditions. If the weather is likely to change for the worse make sure you have enough extra clothing in your pack.

Do tell someone where you are planning to walk especially in areas that see few other walkers.

Do take maps and other navigational aids. Do not rely on mobile devices in areas where reception is poor. Take spare batteries especially in cold weather.

Do check the weather forecast before leaving. The Met Office has a number of forecasts for walkers that identify specific weather risks.

Please Note - These walks have been published for use by site visitors on the understanding that Walking Britain is not held responsible for the safety or well being of those following the routes as described. It is worth reiterating the point that you should embark on a walk with the correct maps preferably at 1:25000 scale. This will enable any difficulties with route finding to be assessed and corrective action taken if necessary.
